Penn College Students Awarded Scholarships After ‘Rodeo’ Victories

Rodeo roundball Two Penn College students were awarded a total of $2,500 in scholarships following the annual Precision Heavy Construction Equipment Rodeo – a popular event won this year by students from the college’s School of Natural Resources Management. Penn College students captured the overall title at the Oct. 25 event, which was held at the Schneebeli Earth Science Center, 10 miles south of the college’s main campus in Williamsport. Always an exciting event – open to the public and held in conjunction with Open House on the college’s campuses – the rodeo has been sponsored by the Service and Operation of Heavy Equipment Association student organization since 1983. Derek E. Adams, of Harrisburg, enrolled in heavy construction equipment technology: Caterpillar equipment emphasis, was awarded $1,500, and Shea O. Reiley, a technology management major from Williamsport who serves a president of the sponsoring organization, received a $1,000 scholarship.

Penn College Falls to Lycoming in Intramural Football Game

On Monday night, Penn College saw why Lycoming College is heading to a national intramural flag-football tournament this weekend: The Warriors scored on a touchdown pass three minutes into the game and went on to beat the Wildcats 34-12. Craig Flint connected on a touchdown pass to Ben Vincent to make it 8-6 early in the game, but that was all of the Penn College points until Gavin Mock took the option from Flint and raced down the sideline to make the final score. In addition to Flint, Mock and Vincent, the Penn College team comprised Brandon Sauers, Brian Brown, Donnie Stevenson, Mike Cavanaugh, Mike McKeon, Ty Holland, Brock Bonanno, Jon Boob and Jake Smerekar.

Fall's Athletics Success Smoothly Changes Seasons

Roar, Wildcats, roar Continuing the momentum of fall sports teams at Penn College – seven teams that posted a .731 winning percentage – Wildcat basketball squads got off to good starts in their home openers against Central Pennsylvania College. Library Shares 'Try Before We Buy' Resources

With 2010 approaching, the Madigan Library has Database Trials for new resources that members of the Penn College community can "try before we buy." For Health Sciences, there are AccessMedicine, Primal Images (3-D anatomy online) and Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews. For new programs involving sustainability, the library is looking at GREENR and the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals. And, finally, a digital collection of major U.S. newspapers is available in Proquest Digital Microfilm. The Submit Feedback form on the page is a quick and easy way to let the library know what you think of these resources.

Counseling Services to Participate in Suicide Survivors' Program

Broadcast to aid suicide survivors Penn College Counseling Services is sponsoring a local conference site for the 11th annual National Survivors of Suicide Day from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, in the Professional Development Center's Tiadaghton Room. Counselors Mary Lee Kelly and Michael S. DiPalma will be involved in the observance, which includes a live simulcast by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The afternoon will include emotional support, information about resources for healing, and a question-and-answer session with survivors and mental health professionals.

Student Organization Donates Books to Correctional Facility

Members of Penn College’s Collegiate Association for County Correctional Education recently completed a library refurbishing project at the Clinton County Correctional Facility. The students donated 15 boxes of textbooks, with an estimated value of more than $2,000, and a bookshelf to the prison’s library.

Seasonal Tradition – The Giving Tree – Returns to Penn College

'The Giving Tree' stands outside Student Activities ... adorned with ripe-for-the-picking holiday wishesAlthough it is hard to believe, the holiday season is upon us. With this wonderful time of year comes a Penn College tradition: The Giving Tree. Sponsored by the Student Activities Office, The Giving Tree is an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, organizations and offices from around the college to give a gift to one or more of 225 local children and youth. Beginning Monday, the tree will be located outside Student Activities (CC, Room 107). Information about children and youth in need is listed on each ornament. To participate, please select an ornament from the tree and bring it to the CC Information Desk, where you will sign out the ornament for the child you selected. Take the ornament with you when you purchase the gift, place your selection in a gift bag and tape the ornament to the bag. Do not wrap the gift.  If you wish, you can write your name, “Penn College” and a message to the child on the back of the ornament. Bring the gift to the desk by 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, to ensure timely delivery. Please help make this holiday season a special one for a local child and participate in The Giving Tree! Library Forum Puts Focus on Fitness

Judy Quinti talks with Madigan Library audience The role of personal responsibility in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and avoiding the risk factors that can spell an early demise was outlined by Judy Quinti, an assistant professor of fitness and lifetime sports at Penn College, in a Thursday forum in Madigan Library's second-floor reading loft. The speaker, joined by Lynne Maietta, of Blue Health Solutions, was the latest in the college library's informative series of free, public forums held on a variety of topics.

Penn College Librarian Recertified as Professional Archivist

Patricia A. Scott The employee who serves as steward of Penn College's institutional history has been recertified by an independent, nonprofit organization of professional archivists. Patricia A. Scott, librarian and archivist in the college’s Madigan Library, was granted recertification by the Academy of Certified Archivists. She has been a member of the academy since 2003; her other memberships include the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference and the Archives and Special Collections Interest Group of the Associated Libraries of Central Pennsylvania.
