Students’ Project Enriches Lives of Nursing-Home Residents

Two construction students at Penn College have collaborated on a “dream” project that will help local nursing-home residents better exercise their green thumbs. Bradley D. Martin, a construction carpentry major from Granville Summit, and Jacob D. Carlson, a cabinetmaking and millwork student from West Chester, recently built three planter boxes and – accompanied by Marc E. Bridgens, assistant dean of construction and design technologies – delivered them to the Valley View Nursing Center near Montoursville.
Penn State Architectural Students Visit Masonry Lab

Students from the School of Construction and Design Technologies tutored architectural students from The Pennsylvania State University in the hands-on hallmark of a Penn College education on Thursday. Spending the day in the college's masonry lab, the Penn State students learned a variety of skills from the helpful students, undertaking projects that helped them both recognize the complexity of masonry work and understand the durability and sustainability of such craftsmanship. Richard R. Motter and Glenn R. Luse, instructors of building construction, also mentored the visitors from University Park. Penn College also received considerable support from Glen Gery Corp., Watsontown Brick and Beavertown Block; and several representatives from the Bricklayers and Allied Craftsworkers Union were on hand to promote the industry and assist with the student guests. Penn College Team Wins First Place in Builders’ Competition

A team of students enrolled in Penn College’s two-year construction majors earned top prize in competition at the recent National Association of Home Builders International Builders’ Show in Florida, the college’s third first-place finish in that category in the past five years. A group of students in four-year majors made the trip, as well, finishing a solid 13th out of more than two dozen entries.
Students Further Cement College’s Reputation at Builders Show

A team of two-year construction students recently reinforced Penn College’s historic presence at the International Builders Show in Orlando, Fla., placing third and keeping alive a streak of top-three finishes that goes back to 1999. "All the teams, especially the new ones, were told that the main competition to watch out for was Brigham Young (University) and us,” said Bernard A. "Barney" Kahn IV, instructor of building construction technology and one of the students’ coaches. The advice was prescient: Brigham Young ultimately took first and second in the two-year competition, the only institution in the 11-team division to place higher than Penn College.
Local Home Builders Boost Support for Student Competitors

The West Branch Susquehanna Builders Association and a business owned by one of its officers have donated another $620 to two teams of Penn College construction students to help defray the costs of competing at the upcoming International Builders Show in Orlando, Fla.
Students Gain Practical Experience at Off-Campus Job Site

A class of Penn College masonry students recently gained valuable experience at a worldwide-focused mission near Montoursville, continuing the institution's tradition of community service through hands-on involvement. Once a week from September through early October, the students installed decorative El Dorado mountain stone on the office building of Tech Service International, a nonprofit organization that provides electrical and technical expertise to evangelical missions worldwide.
Builders' Group Contributes Anew to College's Student Chapter

Students in Penn College's construction majors received a continued boost at a recent awards banquet: the year's second contribution from The Women's Council of the West Branch Susquehanna Builders Association to defray the costs of annually attending the National Association of Home Builders competition. The council presented the Penn College Construction Association – the college's NAHB chapter – with a check for nearly $690, the proceeds of a fund-raiser held in conjunction with the spring builders show at the YMCA Pickelner Arena.

Penn College construction students became teachers for the day, giving architectural students from The Pennsylvania State University a hands-on tutorial in the School of Construction and Design Technologies' masonry lab. Equipped with the requisite safety glasses and armed with trowels, more than 50 Penn State students moved between stations – learning a variety of masonry tips, from brick to flagstone to block. Richard R. Motter and Glenn R. Luse, instructors of building construction, also shared their expertise with the guests from University Park.
