Volvo Donates Skid Steer Loader to Penn College

Volvo Construction Equipment North America has made another generous donation to support students at Penn College. The Asheville, N.C.-based company recently donated a 2006 Volvo MC80B skid steer loader to be used by students in the college’s School of Natural Resources Management.

Students Earn Ribbons at Mid-Atlantic Woodsmen’s Competition

Salladasburg Pupils Visit ESC for 'Earth Day' Observance

Fifth-graders from Salladasburg Elementary School spent Tuesday morning at Penn College's Schneebeli Earth Science Center, enlightened by forest technology students well-versed in a number of outdoor-related topics. Accompanied by parents and teachers from the Jersey Shore Area School District, eight groups of youngsters traveled through a dozen education stations, learning about trees, firefighting and other topics represented by majors in the college's School of Natural Resources Management. But the Ridgway resident is justifiably proud of lasting so long on the tryout road, a committed year-and-a-half journey that ended at last month's final qualifying event in Houston.

Forestry Student Headed to Houston for Olympic Trials

Penn College forest technology major Anthony J. Tettis, profiled on PCToday in February , continues his quest for a spot on the 2008 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team. According to a recent article in his hometown Ridgway Record newspaper – and an e-mail to his faculty adviser, in which he related his "awesome" summer of training and felling trees – Tettis will be in Houston from Aug. 20-26 for the final Olympic trials.

Scholarship Winner Among Four Industry-Honored Forestry Students

Four forest technology students in Penn College’s School of Natural Resources Management, including a scholarship winner recognized for his 4.0 grade-point average, recently were inducted into the North American Forest Technician Honorary.

Fourth-Round Knockout Earns State Title for Forestry Student

Anthony Tettis during Golden Gloves action ... ... and being declared winner by KO Already a contender for the 2008 U.S. Olympic boxing team, a forest technology major at Penn College has added “state champion” to his belt. On April 21, Anthony J. Tettis, of Ridgway, defeated Philadelphia’s Paul Koon – 2006 Pennsylvania champion – during a fourth-round knockout in the state Golden Gloves Championship at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. Eastern champions historically dominate the state, said Ralph J. Tettis, his father, coach and trainer at the Ridgway Boxing Club. But, this year, three Western Pennsylvania champions (including Anthony) were among those vying for state gold. The second-year student now advances to the National Golden Gloves Championship, which will be held April 30 and May 5 in Chattanooga, Tenn. In February, Tettis  won a spot at this summer's Olympic qualifier in Colorado Springs, Colo. Penn College Students Trained in Writing Forest Stewardship Plans

Thirty-seven Penn College forestry students recently participated in intensive training to become Forest Stewardship Plan Writers. The training, presented by James Stiehler, forest stewardship coordinator for the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry; and Allyson B. Muth and James C. Finley from Penn State’s School of Forest Resources, introduced the students to a diverse set of topics to help them become effective at working with private forest owners in Pennsylvania.
