Students, Expert Pair for ‘A German Food and Wine Tasting’

Penn College’s School of Hospitality will host an internationally recognized wine expert on campus and, as part of his visit, will offer “A German Wine and Food Tasting” to benefit international student programs at the college. During the Oct. 7 event, Klaus Wahl, professor of viticulture at the Technical University of Munich, will share his knowledge of wine as diners experience the five tasting portions prepared by School of Hospitality students and faculty. While on campus, Wahl will also speak to students in Wine and Beverage Management and Wines of the World classes and offer professional development for Le Jeune Chef dining room staff.

Welding Students Create Bench in Memory of Former Classmate

Welding students' craft memorial bench Members of the American Welding Society student chapter at Penn College designed and fabricated a bench to memorialize Colt W. Jenny, a former classmate who died in a September 2008 automobile accident. “To the whole group, Colt was a good friend who was always in good spirits,” said Kade E. Poorman, a May graduate of the welding and fabrication engineering technology major and an AWS member. “He was always smiling and had a good attitude toward just about anything. Overall, he was just a good friend to all of us, due to having spent so much time with everyone in the (welding) shop.”

Mentorship Award Presented to Printing-Industry Firm, Employee

Mentor honored Penn College has presented a Mentorship Award to Christopher Kendig/Komori America Corp. for their continuing support of the college’s graphic communications program. Kendig, a district sales manager for the Tokyo-based Komori America Corp. – a premier manufacturer of sheet-fed and web offset printing presses – has worked with Penn College faculty, staff and students for the past six-plus years.

Accounting Graduate Included on Roster of Exemplary Seniors

A graduate of Penn College's four-year accounting major has been included among the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants' "Outstanding Seniors" for the year. Gina M. Indelicarto, of Jersey Shore, was honored in May with the PICPA Award, presented by the college's School of Business and Computer Technologies for excellence in accounting studies under criteria established by the institute. The cum-laude graduate is listed among this year's award-winners at PICPA's " CPAZone ," a Web site exclusively dedicated to Pennsylvania students and educators interested in the accounting profession.

Penn College Aviation Grad Places Third at SkillsUSA Nationals

Aviation alum among national medalists An alumnus of Penn College’s aviation program was among the medalists in recent competition during SkillsUSA’s 45th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, Mo. Linh H. Do, of Lancaster, who graduated cum laude in May with a bachelor’s degree in aviation maintenance technology, won a bronze medal in the championships held June 24-25.

100 Percent of Dental Hygiene Graduates Pass National Boards

All 27 of the most recent graduates of Penn College’s dental hygiene major passed the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination. The purpose of the Dental Hygiene Examination is to assist state boards in determining qualifications of dental hygienists who seek licensure to practice.

Dental Hygiene Alumni Gather for Program's 30th Anniversary

More than 130 alumni attended the daylong observance, which offered continuing education; lunch at Le Jeune Chef Restaurant; dessert and reminiscence with President Davie Jane Gilmour (whose memories included teaching oral anatomy in the geology lab during the program's earliest days); the opportunity for former classmates to pore, laugh and wince over yearbooks and old photographs; and a Hiawatha riverboat cruise. Representatives of nearly every class were on hand, from 10 members of the inaugural Class of 1979 (including one who traveled from Maine) to 2009 grad Kelly A. Braun, a commencement speaker earlier this month.

Penn College Alumni Among Local Pioneers in Gas Exploration

'Pat' Moriarity, outside Chief Oil & Gas' Fairfield Road field office Two Penn College graduates are in the midst of storybook lives, if you consider that the “story” is one of the biggest to hit Pennsylvania in the 150 years since Edwin Drake struck oil at Titusville: development of the Marcellus Shale, a geological swath that runs beneath a half-dozen states and could hold enough natural gas to slake a nation thirsty for a homegrown energy supply. Amanda M. Kennedy and George P. “Pat” Moriarity are employed by an Appalachian arm of Chief Oil & Gas, a Texas-based company that is among those exploring the potentially profitable underground formation.

Penn College Names New Golf Coach

Matt Haile After nine seasons that included six consecutive conference championships and an incredible win streak that reached 155 matches from 2003-08, Penn College golf coach Chet Schuman is retiring. But he passes the torch to someone very familiar with the program: Matt Haile, who placed second in the 2002 Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association championship and won the conference’s individual crown in 2003 as a member of the Wildcat team that began the remarkable string of victories. He also was the Penn State University Athletic Conference individual runner-up in 2005 when the team won its third straight conference title.
