Penn College Student/Faculty Cast to Present Musical Revue

“I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” one of Off-Broadway’s longest-running musicals, will be presented Thursday through Saturday in Penn College's Klump Academic Center. A comedy that celebrates modern-day relationships – exploring “the joys of dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands and wives” – the series of related vignettes will be staged at 7:30 each night. The production, in conjunction with the college’s Student Activities Office, includes adult content and themes. Admission is free to Penn College students and employees; tickets are $5 each for the general public.
Flower Sale Boosts Horticulture Club's 'Relay' Contributions

The Horticulture Club has donated another $300 to Penn College's Relay for Life team, the fourth consecutive year in which the student organization has contributed to the fight against cancer. Centered in the School of Natural Resources Management and co-advised by horticulture instructor Carl J. Bower and Dennis Fink, assistant professor of horticulture, the group donated $5 from each floral arrangement sold during October's observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “We are happy to be able to support such a good cause," Bower said. "Not only does it help the American Cancer Society, it also benefits the horticulture students in their increased volunteerism and knowledge of floral designs." The latest check brings to $1,375 the club's total support of the college's Relay for Life effort, for which Information Technology Services' Kathy A. Kelsey is coordinator.
Students Compete in Radiography ‘Technibowl’

Five radiography students at Penn College – Tammy M. Bergquist, of Montoursville; Natasha A. Mapes, of Mifflinburg; Lita M. Muthler, of Mill Hall; Justin M. Thornley, of Randolph, N.Y.; and Brittany A. Van Gilder, of Bloomsburg – recently participated in a competition showcasing their curricular and technical knowledge. The students were selected by their classmates to represent the Penn College Radiography Class of 2010 in a “technibowl” quiz competition held at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and hosted by the Penn State Hershey radiology program.
Students to Offer Organizational Assistance for Caregiving

As part of the Service Learning in Sociology course, taught by Larue R. Reese, assistant professor of human services/social sciences, Penn College students are offering to help organize “Share the Care” groups for Lycoming County residents who, because of illness or injury, need assistance with daily tasks. The students will host an informational meeting for anyone interested in forming such a group. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 4 in the college’s Student and Administrative Services Center Presentation Room (Room 1056).
Welding Society's Student Chapter Tours Manufacturing Operation

The Penn College student chapter of the American Welding Society recently toured the Shady Grove manufacturing facility of Manitowoc Cranes, thanks to company representatives Jacob Sensinger and Sammy Munuswamy. The students were able to see all aspects of the mobile crane manufacturer. The AWS student chapter meets every Tuesday in Room 100 at the Eureka labs, where the college's welding program has been temporarily relocated during construction of new laboratory space on main campus.

Master of Artisan Baking Visits Classes, Judges Student Competition

Baking and pastry arts students at Penn College benefited recently from a visit to campus by a master in the craft of artisan bread baking, who helped to judge students’ original raisin-bread creations. The visit and contest were sponsored by the California Raisin Marketing Board. Dominique Homo, owner of L’Ecole du Pain in Montreal, worked with students in a seven-hour laboratory session to teach artisan baking techniques using four of his recipes for breads, scones and cookies – all containing raisins. Genaro Gonzales, creative services specialist for the marketing board, also spoke with students on campus.
New Student Exhibit Opens in Bookmarks Café

A new exhibition of student work is on display in the Bookmarks Café at the Madigan Library. The exhibit features brochure covers completed for the Advanced Computer Graphics course taught this semester by Gary R. DiPalma, assistant professor of graphic design. The students created brochure designs for a man-made object; each brochure was divided into three sections. The first section stated the object’s significance; the second covered historical or background information, and the third showed how the object functions. The assignment was approached from a historical, cultural or technological point of view. The exhibition features work by Megan E. Cobb, Mallory L. Decker, Carly M. Dreibelbis, Amanda L. Eisner, Joseph Feminella, Noah B. Hennig, Suzanne M. La Forge, Jennifer L. Reeder, Ashten E. Schwalm and Kendall L. Whitmer. If you have any questions about the course, please contact DiPalma.
College to Host Information Session for Transitioning Veterans

A Veterans Transition Services Information Session will be held Nov. 11 for Penn College veterans, veterans returning from deployment, their families and the general public. The program – hosted by Veterans Affairs, Career Services, Counseling Services and Disability Services at the college – will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. in the first-floor Presentation Room at the Student and Administrative Services Center on the main campus. Representatives from the Williamsport Vet Center, the Lycoming County Office of Veterans Affairs, Pennsylvania CareerLink and Penn College will present information about transitioning back to civilian life.
Classmates Offered Solace Following Student's Death

It is with great sadness that the administration announces the death of student Mark J. Goss, a 20-year-old sophomore in the electronics and computer engineering technology major, from Wall, N.J. His body was discovered in his off-campus apartment overnight. The cause of death is under investigation, according to the Lycoming County coroner. Counseling services are available upon request for any students, faculty or staff. Please contact Counseling Services at 570-327-4765 for any needed support and assistance during this time. College President Davie Jane Gilmour issued the following statement Thursday morning: “We are deeply saddened by Mark’s death and we offer our condolences to his family and friends. There are no words that fully express the grief that follows the death of one so young. We urge Mark’s friends to reach out for support during this difficult time."
