This curriculum is intended to provide a basic understanding of the electrical equipment systems of buildings and the fundamental hands-on skills to troubleshoot, service, and maintain installed electrical equipment in a variety of residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Students will learn basic concepts and applications of electrical codes and specifications and practice the fundamental hands-on skills to prepare for entry-level positions in electrical trade areas. Applications and interpretation of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and safety concerns will be emphasized.
Career Opportunities: Graduates will be prepared for entry-level positions for electrical contractors, apprentice electricians with advancement possibilities, inspectors, or maintenance workers. With additional experience and education, students may progress to management and supervisory positions in the construction and maintenance fields.
Recommended High School Subjects: High school algebra and geometry; communications; electrical trades courses are desirable but not required.
Remediation Strategies: Students should remediate any mathematics or communications deficiencies during the first semester. Placement testing and developmental requirements will be according to existing College Policy.
Transfer Procedures: This major is subject to the transfer standards established by the College (see http://www.pct.edu/catalog/TransferringCredits.htm ). Exceptions must be approved by the school dean.
Program Goals: A graduate of this major should be able to:
- practice safe work habits, identify and eliminate work hazards, and meet minimum work quality standards.
- demonstrate basic knowledge of electrical equipment and systems commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
- demonstrate basic techniques used to install, troubleshoot, repair, and service electrical equipment.
- understand and interpret plans, drawings, specifications and other documents used for electrical installations.
- plan maintenance and repairs of equipment; communicate with colleagues and employers; and work efficiently and effectively with supervisors, subcontractors or other electrical personnel.
