Machine Tool Technology (MY)
Academic School: Industrial & Engineering Technologies
(Effective Fall 2008)

Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.)

This curriculum prepares students to work with engineers and shop superintendents. Students develop skills in machine operation and theory, blueprint reading and mechanical drawing in the program's labs and shops. Training in job routing and the order in which operations are performed is included. In the third semester, the emphasis is on Computer Numerical Control (CNC) systems and computer part programming capabilities. The course work includes discussions of such topics as robotics, graphics, group technology, future trends, and numerical control terms, definitions and standards. Related courses in mathematics, science and physics improve students' advancement potential. Graduates are eligible to take the National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS) certification exams, which are administered at Penn College by certified faculty.

Career Opportunities:  Toolmaker; machinist, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technician; production technician; manufacturing assistant.

Recommended High School Subjects:  Two years of algebra, one year of science.

Remediation Strategies:  Students should remediate any deficiencies prior to enrollment. It is recommended that students remediate deficiencies in the following order of priority: Mathematics, English, Reading. Students testing into MTH 004 or less will not be allowed in this major until the remediation has been completed.
