Advertising Art (AR)

(Effective Fall 2009)

This major prepares students for employment in advertising art and related fields. Students develop skills in drawing, designing, illustrating, color, typesetting, layout, computer graphics, and proper use of tools, equipment and materials. Related courses in photography, and graphic communications, as well as courses in English, mathematics and science, increase the student's career opportunities.

Career Opportunities

Advertising artist, art director, illustrator and layout artist.

Recommended High School Subjects

Academic subjects with strong emphasis on communication, analytical skills and aesthetics are helpful. Geometry and some training in art are desirable.

Remediation Strategies

All entering students will be tested for English, math, and reading deficiencies. Students are expected to remediate any deficiencies as explained in this catalog (see http://www.pct.edu/catalog/PlacementTesting.htm ).

Transfer Procedures

This major is subject to the transfer standards established by the College (see http://www.pct.edu/catalog/TransferringCredits.htm ). Exceptions must be approved by the school dean.

Program Goals

A graduate of this major should be able to:

  • demonstrate hand skills applicable to the various media.
  • produce viable projects based on intended concepts.
  • organize type and images into a functional and aesthetically pleasing layout.
  • identify models of color and design concepts based on recognized theories.
  • demonstrate combined proficiency of technical, artistic, and conceptual skills.
  • communicate clearly, verbally and visually.
  • apply independent problem-solving skills pertinent to the discipline.
  • demonstrate cooperation and the ability to work with people in the career field.
  • analyze designs created by using traditional and computer-generated methods.

Performance Standards

Students must earn a grade of 'C' or better in all courses with an ART and PHO course designator to receive credit for their completion. Students earning a 'D' or below must retake courses in which they are deficient before those courses can be considered as meeting the prerequisite requirements for more advanced courses. Failure to achieve a grade of 'C' or above in a course, after the maximum attempts allowed by College policy, results in withdrawal from the major in which the course is required.
