Applied Technical Studies: Welding Emphasis (TW)

(Effective Fall 2011)

This curriculum provides a basic understanding of welding and the fundamental hands-on skills needed for entry-level positions in the welding industry. Students learn the principles and applications of shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, and flux-cored arc welding. The major also provides training in the fundamentals of communication and mathematics.

Career Opportunities

Entry-level positions in construction, industrial, and production welding fields.

Recommended High School Subjects

Industrial arts or vocational welding; two years of technical mathematics.

Special Equipment Needs

Students will be required to have the tools listed on the welding website.

Remediation Strategies

Students should remediate any deficiencies prior to enrollment in this major. Failure to do so will significantly lengthen the program.

Transfer Procedures

This major is subject to the transfer standards established by the College (see http://www.pct.edu/catalog/TransferringCredits.htm ). Exceptions must be approved by the school dean.

Program Goals

A graduate of this major should be able to:

  • weld safely in shop and field operations, avoiding practices that are hazardous to others.
  • distinguish between the types of welding processes and understand their characteristics, uses, and limitations.
  • construct weldments from sketches, blueprints or verbal instructions according to procedures and specifications.
  • identify ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • apply basic mathematical skills and competencies to solve welding-related problems.
  • demonstrate good work habits.
