Web Design and Multimedia (BWM)
(Effective Fall 2010)
- School of Business & Computer Technologies
- Bachelor of Science Degree (B.S.)
- Available Online via Distance Learning
This completion degree major is specifically designed for students who have completed an associate's degree and desire to further their education in an online baccalaureate degree program. The online 2+2 program will complement the student's associate's degree without duplicating course work. The Bachelor of Science in Web Design and Multimedia will increase graduates' marketability for positions and projects that demand skills in designing and building multimedia interfaces, applications, environments, and experiences. The curriculum includes two semesters of foundational courses, based on the vendor-neutral CIW (Certified Internet Webmaster) certification.
Career Opportunities
The graduate will be prepared for any of the following positions: Web Designer, Web Developer, multimedia specialist, interactive media specialist, and Internet publishing.
Recommended High School Subjects
This degree is designed for students who have completed an approved associate's degree; however, high school subjects that would be beneficial toward the completion of this degree include English, communication, algebra, and computer technology courses.
Special Admissions Requirements
Acceptance into the online Bachelor of Science in Web Design and Multimedia (BWM) degree requires a completed associate's degree in graphic design or other art-related specialty from an accredited or state-approved college or university. Students possessing associate's degrees in other fields may gain entry upon approval of the school. Students returning to college with a significant work history in an art-related field and an associate's degree would also be eligible for consideration.
Remediation Strategies
All students entering the degree program will be expected to meet college standards for mathematics, reading, and English proficiency. Any deficiencies should be remediated during the first semester of the major.
Transfer Procedures
All students entering the major, having completed an associate's degree in graphic design or other art-related degrees will be considered for junior/third year status in the Bachelor of Science in Web Design and Multimedia (BWM) major. Students who have not met bachelor-degree requirements for the first four semesters will be required to do so while completing the BWM degree. Additional credits earned in the associate's degree that meet requirements for the bachelor's degree will be replaced with school-approved web design and multimedia directed elective courses.
Program Goals
A graduate of this major should be able to:
- plan, design, and implement Web environments to meet clients needs.
- create websites that convey information in an organized, logical structure.
- develop styles to present the information in a pleasing manner according to best practices or industry standards.
- evaluate functionality of web navigation.
- evaluate human-computer interaction factors when planning the website.
- create animation and develop compelling interactive environments.
- create digital media to be rendered on traditional and mobile devices.
- evaluate the needs for accessibility when producing web and multimedia components.
Performance Standards
Students must maintain a 'C' or greater in all BWM courses. If a 'D' or lower is earned, the course must be repeated. Failure to achieve a grade of 'C' or above after the maximum attempts allowed by College policy results in withdrawal from the major. Students should work closely with their advisers and with the program faculty to ensure that they are meeting all criteria for satisfactory progress in the program.
