Avionics Maintenance Theory I

Study of avionics communication and navigation, focusing on the theoretical concepts and maintenance of High Frequency (HF), Very High Frequency (VHF), and Ultra High Frequency (UHF) communication and navigation systems as well as audio integration systems used on aircraft. Emphasis on the subjects covered in the Federal Communications Commission General Radio Telephone Operators Examination. System analysis includes historical, modern, and future contexts. Application of avionics communication and navigation principles, focusing on the High Frequency (HF), Very High Frequency (VHF), and Ultra High Frequency (UHF) communication and navigation systems as well as audio integration systems used on aircraft. Human Factors in Aviation Technology

AVC320

Study in the causes of human error and how that error impacts safety issues in the aviation maintenance department. Analysis includes relationships between management, pilots, and other flight crews; resource management plans; common errors; risk management; and technology advancements that have lead to error reduction. Case studies identify critical points in aviation incidents and accidents. Avionics Maintenance Theory II

AVC323

Study of microwave pulse systems used on board aircraft, focusing on flight line testing of distance measuring equipment (DME), air traffic control transponders, airborne weather radar, and radar altimeters. Exploration of tactical navigation, passive weather detection, and collision avoidance systems, and the role these systems play in the Federal Aviation Administration's reduced vertical separation minimums and terrain awareness systems. 3 Credits (3 Lecture) Prerequisite(s): AVC311 or AVI230 and AVI335. Corequisite(s): AVC324.

Avionics Maintenance Applications II

AVC324

Practical application involving microwave pulse systems used on board aircraft. Emphasis on the practical maintenance of distance measuring equipment (DME), air traffic control transponders, airborne weather radar, passive storm detection systems, and radar altimeters. (Formerly AVC 336) 1 Credit (0 Lecture - 3 Lab) Prerequisite(s): AVC311 or AVI230 and AVI335. Corequisite(s): AVC323.

Advanced Composites

AVC331

Introduction to the approved techniques and practices for advanced composite damage assessment, classification of damage, laminate repair, and honeycomb core repair. Methods, materials, and repair techniques meet industry standards and FAA standards for continued airworthiness. 3 Credits (1 Lecture - 6 Lab) Prerequisite(s): AVC210 or AVC310 or AVI210.

Flight Management and Control

Study of flight management and control systems, including the theoretical concepts and maintenance of autopilots, integrated flight control systems, and flight management systems. Additional study includes area navigation systems, including Automatic Direction Finding (ADF), land-based area navigation (VOR/DME R-NAV), LORAN-C, and GPS. 3 Credits (2 Lecture - 3 Lab) Prerequisite(s): AVC323 and AVC324. Avionics FCC Preparation

Preparation for the Federal Communications Commission General Radio Telephone License examination. Topics covered include test equipment used in the aviation industry, avionics circuits, troubleshooting techniques, design considerations of aviation transmitters and receivers, and design considerations of aviation antennas. Study includes Federal Communications Commission rules and a review of test taking techniques. 3 Credits (3 Lecture) Prerequisite(s): AVC313.

Advanced Sheet Metal Structures

AVC350

Advanced study of aircraft sheet metal structures. Topics include repair techniques and communication with aircraft manufacturers, federal aviation administration, and aircraft structural engineers. Emphasis on FAA required data, forms, and records. Research element: results of past incorrect structural repairs. Course work includes a sheet metal project, to be built and repaired using advanced fasteners. 3 Credits (2 Lecture - 3 Lab) Prerequisite(s): AVC108 and AVC309 or AVC108 and AVI205. Fall Only.

Aviation Maintenance Management

Introduction to aviation maintenance management, including an in-depth examination of the airline, corporate, and repair station environments. Exploration of the responsibilities of aircraft maintenance managers in various aviation organizations and federal regulations governing the maintenance requirements for aircraft operators. Emphasis on Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) procedures and requirements. Research: organization operation, policy, quality control, and supervision. 3 Credits (3 Lecture) Prerequisite(s): MGT115. Fall Only.

Long Range Navigation Systems

Study of area navigation systems, including Automatic Direction Finding (ADF), land-based area navigation (VOR/DME R-NAV), LORAN-C, and GPS. Emphasis on the most popular forms of aviation navigation. Overview of navigation systems, focusing on the modern satellite systems of today and tomorrow. 2 Credits (1 Lecture - 3 Lab) Prerequisite(s): AVC182 and AVC327. Spring Only.

Avionics Integration Management

Study of the management of avionics integrations and installations. Emphasis on custom interconnects between various avionics subsystems in accordance with appropriate Federal Aviation Regulations. (Formerly AVC340). 3 Credits (1 Lecture - 6 Lab) Prerequisite(s): AVC323 and AVC324.

Senior Project Proposal

AVC493

Application of knowledge gained in the Aviation Maintenance Technology major, resulting in a proposal with accompanying documentation. Discussion and research may include topics such as cost effectiveness, aircraft and avionics maintenance, aircraft overhaul, and the effect of outside entities on the aviation industry. Designed to promote assimilation of knowledge gained from prior course work and an understanding of how that knowledge applies to the aviation maintenance professional. 1 Credit (1 Lecture) Corequisite(s): AVC320. Senior Project

Application of knowledge gained in the Aviation Maintenance Technology program as it pertains to the aviation maintenance professional. Topics for discussion and research include, but are not limited to, cost effectiveness, maintaining aircraft and avionics, aircraft overhaul, and the effect of outside entities on the aviation industry. Completion requirements include a major project with appropriate industry-required documentation. 3 Credits (3 Lecture) Prerequisite(s): AVC327 and AVC328 and AVC329 or AVC313 and AVC314.
