Airframe Sheet Metal Structures
Methods and materials used in the construction, design, and repair of aircraft metallic structures. Topics include approved methods, processes, and procedures used in inspection, repair, manufacture, and fabrication of sheet metal structures and components. 4 Credits (2 Lecture - 6 Lab) Prerequisite(s): AVC205 and AVC207. AVC310
Non-Metallic Structures
Study of nonmetallic aircraft structures, including inspection and repair of composite, fiberglass, plastic, honeycomb, and wood materials used in manufacture and repair procedures. Application of industry-accepted standards that ensure the continual airworthiness of the airframe and components as well as the safety and compatibility of nonmetallic structures. Repair, inspection, and testing are used to help students differentiate between the types of material used in the manufacture, inspection, and repair of various structural and nonstructural components. 1.50 Credits (1 Lecture - 1.60 Lab) Prerequisite(s): AVC205 and AVC207. Navigation and Communication Systems
Advanced study of integrated navigation and communication systems found on current-generation aircraft. Theory and operation of aircraft communication systems, including VHF and SATCOM. Theory and operation of aircraft navigation systems, including cockpit displays and integration of the autopilot. Rotary Wing Aircraft
Study of the theory of flight for rotary wing aircraft and the laws of physics that apply to the operation of helicopters. Topics include primary flight controls and rotor heads, control of the helicopter about the three axes, detailed analysis of the rigging, special precautions for helicopter operation, and nonstandard flight platforms. 1.50 Credits (1 Lecture - 1.60 Lab) Prerequisite(s): AVC205. Avionics Maintenance Theory I
Study of avionics communication and navigation, focusing on the theoretical concepts and maintenance of High Frequency (HF), Very High Frequency (VHF), and Ultra High Frequency (UHF) communication and navigation systems as well as audio integration systems used on aircraft. Emphasis on the subjects covered in the Federal Communications Commission General Radio Telephone Operators Examination. System analysis includes historical, modern, and future contexts. Application of avionics communication and navigation principles, focusing on the High Frequency (HF), Very High Frequency (VHF), and Ultra High Frequency (UHF) communication and navigation systems as well as audio integration systems used on aircraft. Emphasis on the subjects covered in the Federal Communications Commission General Radio Telephone Operators Examination. Human Factors in Aviation Technology
Study in the causes of human error and how that error impacts safety issues in the aviation maintenance department. Analysis includes relationships between management, pilots, and other flight crews; resource management plans; common errors; risk management; and technology advancements that have lead to error reduction. Case studies identify critical points in aviation incidents and accidents. Avionics Maintenance Theory II
Study of microwave pulse systems used on board aircraft, focusing on flight line testing of distance measuring equipment (DME), air traffic control transponders, airborne weather radar, and radar altimeters. Exploration of tactical navigation, passive weather detection, and collision avoidance systems, and the role these systems play in the Federal Aviation Administration's reduced vertical separation minimums and terrain awareness systems. 3 Credits (3 Lecture - 0 Lab) Prerequisite(s): AVC311 or AVI230 and AVI335. Flight Management and Control
Study of flight management and control systems, including the theoretical concepts and maintenance of autopilots, integrated flight control systems, and flight management systems. Avionics FCC Preparation
Preparation for the Federal Communications Commission General Radio Telephone License examination. Topics covered include test equipment used in the aviation industry, avionics circuits, troubleshooting techniques, design considerations of aviation transmitters and receivers, and design considerations of aviation antennas. Advanced Sheet Metal Structures
Advanced study of aircraft sheet metal structures. Topics include repair techniques and communication with aircraft manufacturers, federal aviation administration, and aircraft structural engineers. Emphasis on FAA required data, forms, and records. Research element: results of past incorrect structural repairs. Introduction to aviation maintenance management, including an in-depth examination of the airline, corporate, and repair station environments. Exploration of the responsibilities of aircraft maintenance managers in various aviation organizations and federal regulations governing the maintenance requirements for aircraft operators. Emphasis on Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) procedures and requirements. Senior Project Proposal
Application of knowledge gained in the Aviation Maintenance Technology major, resulting in a proposal with accompanying documentation. Discussion and research may include topics such as cost effectiveness, aircraft and avionics maintenance, aircraft overhaul, and the effect of outside entities on the aviation industry. Designed to promote assimilation of knowledge gained from prior course work and an understanding of how that knowledge applies to the aviation maintenance professional. 1 Credit (1 Lecture - 0 Lab) Corequisite(s): AVC320. Application of knowledge gained in the Aviation Maintenance Technology program as it pertains to the aviation maintenance professional.
