Academic School: Construction & Design Technologies
Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.)
The Architectural Technology major provides students with the knowledge and skills that lead to employment and advancement in the field of architecture. The course work enables the graduate to work in architectural or building construction related jobs or continue toward an advanced degree in a related field. The architectural technician will be involved in work requiring a knowledge of computer applications, including computer-aided drafting, construction materials, mechanical and structural systems, estimating, site and building design fundamentals, presentation methods, building codes, and specifications.
Career Opportunities: Graduates may work as architectural drafters, designers, estimators, detailers, and specification writers in the public and private sector. Employment is also available in related industries such as building engineering, construction, materials manufacturing, and residential design/build contracting.
Recommended High School Subjects: Two years of algebra, one year of science and art/design.
Remediation Strategies: All entering students will be tested for English, math, and reading deficiencies. Students are expected to remediate any deficiencies as explained in this catalog (see http://www.pct.edu/catalog/PlacementTesting.htm ).
Transfer Procedures: This major is subject to the transfer standards established by the College (see http://www.pct.edu/catalog/TransferringCredits.htm ). Exceptions must be approved by the school dean.
Program Goals: A graduate of this major should be able to:
- demonstrate technical expertise and problem-solving ability through the use of effective data analysis, appropriate tools and electronic media (including the Internet and computer hardware/software), and standard mathematical computations.
- integrate the various applications of construction materials, systems, and methods used in the building industry.
- describe the connections between architecture and other construction fields.
- identify the career opportunities available within architecture and its related industries.
- analyze economical and environmental impacts of architectural decisions.
- demonstrate a knowledge of architectural history and its relevance to modern architectural practices.
- describe the stages of the architectural design process, the phases of a typical building project, and the responsibiities of everyone involved.
- communicate ideas and solutions using appropriate architectural vocabulary.
- work cooperatively in teams.
- present architectural designs and concepts using various means as appropriate, including sketching, manual drafting, computer-aided drafting, and model making.
- interpret architectural drawings and related documents.
