Course Descriptions

BHV310
Cooling System Design
This course is an introduction to the different types of cooling equipment. The course addresses the basic skills required to calculate cooling loads, layout, and design residential and commercial air conditioning systems. The course will cover the different types of equipment and the proper selection for each application. 3 Credits (2 Lecture - 3 Lab) Prerequisite(s): ACR237 or ACR236 and ACR238. Fall Only.

BHV315
Heating Design
This course is a study of the techniques used in the design of residential and small commercial Hydronic heating systems. Students are introduced to requirements of sizing and selecting equipment, distribution systems, controls and other devices necessary for efficient system design, installation and operation. 3 Credits (2 Lecture - 3 Lab) Prerequisite(s): PLH236 and PLH238 and PLH244 or PLH239 and PLH244. Corequisite(s): MTH180.

BHV320
Advanced Cooling System Design
This is an advanced course in HVAC design. The course will deal with topics that require special design needs, such as computer rooms, clean rooms, laboratories and test chambers. The course will show the proper design of these systems and differences they have from standard cooling applications. 3 Credits (2 Lecture - 3 Lab) Prerequisite(s): BHV310. Spring Only.

BHV325
Advanced Heating Design
This course is a study of the techniques used in the design of various commercial Hydronic heating systems. Students are introduced to requirements of sizing and selecting equipment, distribution systems, controls and other devices necessary for efficient system design, installation and operation. 3 Credits (2 Lecture - 3 Lab) Prerequisite(s): BHV315.

BHV365
Advanced HVAC/R Control Systems
This course will present basic control systems theory and design. Additional topics include control systems and wiring diagrams, sensors, and network communications. Custom control strategies will be developed and programmed and systems used for commercial air conditioning, commercial refrigeration, and energy management will be analyzed. (Formerly BHV370) 3 Credits (2 Lecture - 3 Lab) Prerequisite(s): ELT252.

BHV400
Commercial Refrigeration Systems Design
This course will familiarize the student with the operation, design, and application of commercial systems. The use, installation, and design of refrigeration systems used in stores, supermarkets, and industry will be covered. 3 Credits (2 Lecture - 3 Lab) Prerequisite(s): ACR111 and ACR237 and ELT253 or ACR111 and ACR236 and ACR238 and ELT253. Fall Only.

BHV431
Environmental Impacts of the HVAC Industry
This course is a study of the impacts of the HVAC industry on the natural environment in the U.S. and the world, including the social and technological responses to these environmental impacts. Special topics will include pollution sources, the extent and forms of water, air and solid waste pollution, health effects, the historical growth of the environmental movement and the HVAC industry, and technological responses to HVAC related pollutants. Important topics include refrigerant use and management, fuel spills and storage, stack emissions and green buildings. Special emphasis will highlight the place technological development and energy efficiency has on reducing negative environmental impact. This course is a writing enriched course where formal and informal writing will be required and emphasized. (Formerly BHV 430) 3 Credits (3 Lecture - 0 Lab) Prerequisite(s): BHV320 and BHV325 and ENL111 and MTH180. (Science, Technology and Society, Writing Enriched)

BHV432
Mechanical System Design
This course will expand upon mechanical system design methodologies and present commercial software applications related to project management and engineering analysis. Building mechanical systems will be presented as well as varied applications ranging from clean rooms to refrigerated containers. Concepts and practices will be presented related to project management, energy management, indoor air quality control, fire protection systems and large piping systems. Software will include finite element analysis (FEA) and MS Project. Working in small teams, commercial HVAC projects will be investigated, design strategies identified, systems designed and project plans developed. (Formerly BHV 435) 3 Credits (2 Lecture - 3 Lab) Prerequisite(s): BHV320 and BHV325.

BHV495
Senior Project
This course is intended as a capstone project for students in the BHV program. Students will select a HVAC/R related subject of personal interest and design a practical mechanical system. Design activities will include research, analysis, equipment specification and project planning. The project will be presented in both written and oral formats. The course will include lectures on various current topics related to HVAC/R. 3 Credits (3 Lecture - 0 Lab) Prerequisite(s): BHV320 and BHV325 and BHV365 and BHV400. Corequisite(s): BHV432.
