Basic Construction Emphasis (TO)
Certificate
This curriculum is intended to provide a basic understanding of the construction techniques for residential and light commercial buildings. Students will learn basic building systems and materials concepts, essential planning and layout methods, and practice the fundamental hands-on skills to prepare for entry-level positions in the construction industry. Interrelationships of building systems, construction techniques, and safety concerns will be emphasized.
Career Opportunities: Graduates will be prepared for entry-level positions for maintenance workers, facilities managers, building contractors, construction material sales, and inspectors. With additional experience and education, students may progress to management and supervisory positions in the construction and maintenance fields.
Recommended High School Subjects: High school algebra and geometry; communications; building trades courses are desirable but not required.
Remediation Strategies: Students should remediate any mathematics or communications deficiencies during the first semester. Placement testing and developmental requirements will be according to existing College Policy.
Transfer Procedures: This major is subject to the transfer standards established by the College and detailed in the Information section (see "Transferring Credits") of this catalog. Exceptions must be approved by the school dean.
Program Goals: A graduate of this major should be able to:
- practice safe work habits, identify and eliminate work hazards, and meet minimum work quality standards for entry level construction personnel.
- demonstrate basic knowledge of construction methods commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
- demonstrate a basic knowledge and skills in the use of common construction tools and measuring instruments.
- demonstrate a basic knowledge of applicable building codes.
- understand and interpret plans, drawings, specifications and other documents used for the construction, modification, and repair of buildings.
- communicate effectively with colleagues and employers; and work efficiently and effectively with supervisors, subcontractors or other construction personnel.
