Counseling Services – Academic & Personal Counseling
Counselors provide academic intervention activities designed to assist students who are experiencing academic difficulties. These activities include Early Alert cards, Midterm Intervention sessions and individual assistance. In addition to being available in the Counseling and Career Services Center, counselors are on location one day per week in the Academic Schools to meet with students. Each counselor works with students in specific Schools. A counselor is available to assist students who are having academic difficulties by working with them to develop a personal plan for success.
Personal Counseling
College counselors are available to aid students in resolving many types of problems. Such problems may involve social, emotional, vocational, and personal concerns. All information is handled in a confidential setting. Services of the Counseling Center include:
- Short term personal counseling
- Crisis intervention
- Career Development
- Administering and interpreting self assessment inventories
In some cases, a counselor will determine that the needs of a student would be best met through a community agency off-campus. Referrals are made when the student is in crisis, has a long-term, ongoing problem, or can otherwise benefit from the resources of an outside agency. Counselors will assist students in obtaining such services, when appropriate.
Beginning your college career can be an exciting transition. Both traditional and non-traditional students face many of the same challenges during this time. In order to assist students with the process, the Counseling office offers support groups. Some groups are designed to work with special populations, such as returning adult students and displaced workers. Additional groups such as stress management and others are open to all populations.
Students interested in individual assistance or in participating in a support group are encouraged to contact the Counseling & Career Services' Center to set up an appointment with a counselor at (570) 327-4765.
