John Rodriguez-McKeon struck out four in two innings of relief in game two

NANTICOKE, Pa. - Sophomore Cody Buterbaugh (Conestoga) racked up five hits and five RBI to lead the Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team in its sweep of Luzerne County Community College. The Wildcats won 8-3 and 15-6 improving their overall record to 18-9. Sophomores Jarod Bull (Jacobus) and Brian Santangelo (Middletown, Conn.) recorded victories in the games.

In the opener, Bull pitched a complete game giving up one earned run and striking out six. Luzerne took the early lead with a run in the first off an error. Penn College answered in the second with two runs including bases loaded singles from Cody Buterbaugh and freshman Zachary Buterbaugh (Conestoga).

The Wildcats tacked on two more in the fifth off a two-RBI triple from senior Skylar Gingrich (Lititz). Four runs in the seventh inning sealed the deal as Gingrich hit a two-RBI double followed by two RBIs from freshman Kevin Fink (Hatfield) from a single. Luzerne plated two runs in the seventh as the defense commited an error.

Gingrich finished the game 3-4 with four RBI while Fink had two hits.

In game two, Santangelo went five innings with two earned runs and six strikeouts. Penn College put up nine runs in the first which included five walks. Cody Buterbaugh singled for an RBI in the inning. Luzerne responded in the bottom of the inning with four runs, capitalizing on an error and added another run in the second, again from an error.

The defense settled and the Wildcat offense kept going making it a 10-4 game in the third as Cody Buterbaugh doubled for an RBI. Junior Tyler Rice (Trumbull, Conn.) and Zack Buterbaugh hit RBI singles for two runs in the fourth.

Freshman John Rodriguez-McKeon (Stroudsburg) came in relief for Santangelo in the sixth and gave up a run. Gingrich made the victory official in the seventh hitting a three run home run. Rodriguez-McKeon finished the game with four strikeouts.

Cody Buterbaugh finished the game with three hits and five RBI.

Next up, Penn College hosts Penn State Scranton on Thursday, Apr. 19 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
