Freshman Cora Bova went 2-4 with an RBI against Southern Vermont
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Pennsylvania College of Technology softball team split a pair of games on its first day of the 2012 Snowbird Softball Tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Wildcats opened with a 6-5 win over Southern Vermont College and then fell 15-0 (5 inn.) to King’s College (Pa.). “We hit the ball better than we anticipated,” said head coach Roger Harris. “We only have two returning starters from last year’s team, so it was a nice surprise.”
Against Southern Vermont, sophomore Lacy Lose (Avis) recorded the win giving up four earned runs and striking out eight in seven innings of work. After allowing a run in the top of the first, Lose helped her own cause with a two RBI single in the bottom of the inning to give Penn College the 2-1 lead.
Both teams scored a run in the third with freshman Cora Bova (Port Allegany) getting the RBI single for the Wildcats. Three runs from Vermont in the fourth gave the team the 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Stephanie Koleno (Moshannon) hit a double scoring two followed by a single from sophomore Dana Ritter (Walden, N.Y.) to score Koleno giving Penn College the 6-5 advantage for the win.
Bova ended the game going 3-3 while Koleno and freshman Casey Davis (New Albany) were 2-4. Penn College ended the game totaling 13 hits.
Against King’s, Davis and freshman Stephanie Kriefrider (Douglassville) each recorded a single. Kriefrider pitched two innings giving up six earned runs while freshman Emily Yoder (Catawissa) closed out the last three with four earned runs.
Next up, Penn College plays on Tuesday, Mar. 6 and takes on Swarthmore College at 9:30 a.m. followed by Miami Univ. (Ohio) at 11:30.
