Senior Lyndsey Smith had 41 assists on the day
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Senior Lyndsey Smith (Mechanicsburg) notched 41 assists but the Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s volleyball team had a tough day at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. The #8 Wildcats played three games in pool play and lost all best-of-three matches.
In the first game against #6 Spalding University, Penn College (20-12) lost 2-0. The Wildcats played a tough first set losing 25-23 and followed it up with another hard fought set falling 25-16. Freshman Courtney Gernert (Palmyra) led the team with four kills while Smith had 16 assists and junior Tara Powell (Burgettstown) had a team-leading eight digs.
As a team, the Wildcats totaled 23 kills and 19 digs.
The toughest match of the day against #2 Rochester College (Mich.) followed as Penn College lost 2-0 in two lightning quick sets of 25-14 and 25-7. Smith had eight assists in the game while the Wildcats totaled only eight kills. Smith and Gernert each notched six digs to lead the team.
The Wildcats put up a fight in their last game of the day against #4 UC Clermont. After dropping the first set 25-18, they came back to win set two 25-18. Set three was tough and they were just edged out 15-11.
Sophomore Lindsay Moyer (Canton) had seven kills while Smith had 17 assists. Gernert, Powell and freshman Kasey Smith (Allison Park) each had five digs to lead the team.
Penn College will play its final pool play match against #10 PSU Mont Alto. The game is a must-win for the Wildcats to advance into the knock-out rounds. The match is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
