Junior Tara Powell had 13 kills on the day for the Wildcats
HAZLETON, Pa. – Freshman Melissa Lake (Winburne) notched 15 kills, five aces and six digs to help the Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s volleyball team go 2-0 at a Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) tri-match Saturday. The Wildcats defeated Penn State Wilkes Barre 3-2 and then swept host Penn State Hazleton 3-0. Junior Tara Powell (Burgettstown) had a good day with 13 kills, four aces and 18 digs. Penn College now improves to 6-6 overall and stays perfect in the PSUAC 3-0.
Against Wilkes Barre, the Wildcats took the first two games 25-22, 25-22. The Lions just slipped by in the third set winning 26-24 and then took the fourth 25-20. Penn College settled down though and won the match with a 15-8 fifth set win.
Lake totaled 14 kills in the match while Powell added 10. Sophomore Rachel Heller (Allison Park) led the team with 10 digs and senior Lyndsey Smith (Mechanicsburg) had 23 assists.
In the second match against Hazleton, the Wildcats were sharp winning 25-22, 25-3 and 25-11. Freshmen Kelly Hebert (Wellsboro) and Courtney Gernert (Palmyra) each had four kills to lead the team. Gernert also added seven digs while Smith had 16 assists.
Penn College will next travel to Penn State DuBois on Thursday, Sept. 22 for a 7 p.m. match.
