Sophomore Garret Hornung at bat

MONT ALTO, Pa. – Sophomore Garrett Hornung (Emporium) notched four hits, six runs and an RBI as the Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team split with Penn State Mont Alto in Penn conference action Thursday. The Wildcats dropped the opener 6-4 but came back to win the second 8-3. Junior Skylar Gingrich (Lititz) added three hits with five RBI.

In game one, Penn College (10-7, 1-5 PSUAC) took an early lead scoring two in the first including an RBI single from senior Ethan Boyd (Roaring Spring). Mont Alto equalized in the bottom of the inning and added three more runs in the third giving them the 5-3 lead. After scoring a run in the fifth, Penn College had a chance to tie it up with a runner on third and less than two outs, but could not get the run. Mont Alto scored one more run to seal the victory.

Hornung had two hits in the game with three runs while Gingrich had a double with two RBI.

Game two started off the same with the Wildcats scoring two in the first this time off a 2 RBI double from sophomore Ryan Weachock (Pottsville). Mont Alto came back with two in the bottom of the inning and went ahead 3-2 in the second. Penn College broke it open in the fifth with three runs capped off by an RBI double from Gingrich. They added two more runs in the seventh to take the win.

Freshman Brian Santangelo (Middletown, Conn.) recorded the win with three strikeouts in five innings of work. Freshman Phillip Carnevale (Carteret, N.J.) pitched two scoreless innings in relief with only one hit.

Also for the Wildcats, sophomore Matthew King (Southampton) had two doubles in the game.

Penn College next hosts Penn State York on Sun., April 17 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
