Penn College captured its first win of the season with a 61-59 nailbiter against Alfred
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Pennsylvania College of Technology men’s basketball team just edged out Alfred University 61-59 in non-conference action. Junior Leroy Joiner (Williamsport) notched a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead all scorers. The win breaks the Wildcats’ four game losing streak and improves the team to 1-4 overall.
With just :04 seconds left and the score 60-59 in Penn College’s favor, Joiner would hit one from the charity stripe to give the team the two point lead. Alfred would not be able to get a shot off to try to send it into overtime.
The Wildcats started off hot allowing only two points from Alfred in the first ten minutes. They would be up 28-7 in the eighth minute. Senior Greg Solyak (Lititz) would sink nine in the run. The Saxons would charge back though and bring it to within two with two minutes left before going into the break down 34-31.
In the half, Penn College would shoot 51 percent from the field. Solyak would finish the game with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Out of the break the Wildcats hit two quick jumpers to get some breathing room, but Alfred would not go away keeping in to within four for the first 10 minutes. Joiner would hit a three in the 5th to give the Wildcats their largest lead of the half at 56-45.
The Saxons would counter with a 10-0 run to bring it to within one with one minute left.
As a team Penn College shot 49 percent from the field and 58 from the line (7-12).
