Penn College outscored the Lions 39-2 in the sweep
SCRANTON, Pa. – Sophomore Thomas Hughes (Easton) had six hits and three RBI as the Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team won its ninth straight game with a sweep of Penn State Scranton. The Wildcats won 16-1 and 23-1 ending both games in five innings. They improve to 18-7 overall and 9-5 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference.
A seven-run inning kicked off game one. The Wildcats scored four more in the next three innings before five runs in the fifth ended it early. Freshman James Funk (Washington Boro) earned the win pitching four innings and striking out 10. Freshman Branden Johnson (Wyalusing) pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Sophomore Josh Longsderff (Columbia) went 3-4 with an RBI and three runs while sophomore Matt King (Southampton) went 2-3 with a double and three RBI. Hughes also had a good game with two hits an RBI and two runs.
In game two, Penn College scored 14 runs in the third inning. Hughes stayed hot going 4-5 with a home run, two RBI and five runs. Senior Ethan Boyd (Roaring Spring) hit a two-run home run while Funk followed with a three-run shot. Sophomore Tyler Rice (Trumbull, Conn.) had three hits with a double and four RBI.
Freshman Cody Buterbaugh (Conestoga) notched the win pitching all five innings and striking out six in his first outing on the mound.
Penn College next travels to Penn State Beaver on Mon., April 25 for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
