The Lady Wildcats will next face #3 Ave Maria

AKRON, Ohio – With the help of two home runs, including the game-winning, walk-off grand slam from freshman Jessica Gmerek (Bellefonte), the Pennsylvania College of Technology softball team defeated No. 4 Carlow University 10-7 Tuesday night at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Small College World Series. Both team’s traded leads with Carlow taking a 7-5 edge into the bottom of the seventh. After the Lady Wildcats scored a run to cut the lead, Carlow intentionally loaded the bases to make a force at home, but Gmerek made them pay sending one over the fence. The win keeps Penn College alive in the tournament and will next take on No. 3 Ave Maria at 9 p.m tonight.

Carlow opened the scoring in the third with two runs, all with two outs.
Penn College (20-13) struck back in the fourth with sophomore Katie Kratzer (Lynch Station, Va.) leading the inning with a single followed by Gmerek who hit a shot just clearing the fences to tie the game at two.

Carlow answered the next inning scoring three runs off of four hits to make it 5-2.
Back to back singles from freshman Macie Lucas (Reedsville) and sophomore Nicole Lo Furno (Glen Mills) scored three runs to the tie the game up in the sixth at five.

Lo Furno ended the game with two RBI.

Three base hits in the seventh allowed Carlow to score two runs to take back the lead. The Lady Wildcats dug deep in their final at-bats getting the first four batters on-base bringing Gmerek to the plate.

Freshman Arika Stopper (Williamsport) recorded her second win of the tournament on the mound pitching all seven innings allowing five earned runs off of 12 hits with four strikeouts.

Gmerek totaled six RBI in the game while sophomore Karey Wolfe (Milton) added two hits to Penn College’s total of nine.
