Jessica Gmerek totaled six hits and five RBI for the Lady Wildcats

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – With the help of six hits, including a two-run home run and five RBI from freshman Jessica Gmerek (Bellefonte), the Pennsylvania College of Technology softball team went 2-0 on day one of its spring break tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Lady Wildcats opened with an 8-0 win against Gordon College then followed up with a 5-3 victory over SUNY IT. Freshmen Brianne Brewer (Jersey Shore) and Arika Stopper (Williamsport) each recorded a win for Penn College.

In the opener against Gordon, Brewer pitched a gem going five strong allowing only one hit and striking out nine. Penn College started its tab in the second when freshman Marie Lucas (Reedsville) hit an RBI single.

Sophomore Karey Wolfe (Milton) hit a 2 RBI double in the fourth to cap off a four-run inning. The Lady Wildcats were able to end it early scoring three more runs in the fifth including a 2 RBI triple from Gmerek.

For the game, Gmerek led going 2-2 with three RBI. Freshman Brittney McHugh (Frederick, Md.) started her collegiate career going 2-2 while Wolfe was 2-4 with 3 RBI. As a team, Penn College totaled 10 hits.

Against SUNY IT, Stopper pitched seven giving up seven hits and two earned runs while striking out five. After allowing two runs in the first, the Lady Wildcats took the lead in the second scoring three with sophomore Katie Kratzer (Lynch Station, Va.) notching two RBI off a single.

Gmerek gave her team some breathing room in the third hitting a two-run bomb. SUNY IT scored one more run in the sixth, but Penn College held on for the win.

Gmerek was 2-3 with two RBI in the game while sophomore Nicole Lo Furno (Glenside) was 1-2 with an RBI. As a team, the Lady Wildcats totaled six hits.

Penn College next takes on Penn State Harrisburg and Ursinus College on Tuesday, Mar. 11 beginning at 11:30 a.m.
