Mazkenzie Brown had 14 points and rebounds against Brandywine
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Despite leading throughout most of the game, the Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s basketball team lost 94-88 in overtime to undefeated conference opponent Penn State Brandywine. The Lady Wildcats led 37-35 at the break and were ahead as high as 15 in the game that evens them out to 4-4 in the Penn State University Athletic Conference and 8-8 overall. Freshman Jamie Steer (South Williamsport) scored a season and personal high 33 points.
Penn College came out hot with a 15-2 run, seven from Jamie Steer. Sophomore Jenna Matzinger (Coudersport) hit a layup in the 14th to give the team its largest lead of the game at 19-4.
Matzinger ended the game with 19 points and 15 rebounds.
The Lions regrouped and slowly chipped away at the lead ended the first half on a 10-0 tear to go into the break down only two.
Matzinger hit back-to-back layups in the second to give a six-point cushion for the Lady Wildcats. Just four minutes later, Brandywine’s Jessica Gledhill hit a jumper tying the game at 45. Eight lead changes and three more ties followed before the Lady Wildcats went on a small run to get a 75-68 lead with just over two minutes of play remaining.
Senior Kierstin Steer (South Williamsport) hit a free throw with eight seconds left giving Penn College the 79-77 advantage. The Lions’ Emily Lawry Thompson tied it up just beating the buzzer with a layup and sending it into overtime.
Kierstin Steer ended the game with nine points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists while Lawry Thompson had 20 points and 12 rebounds.
In extra time, Brandywine took control as Penn College struggled with turnovers.
As a team, Penn College shot .407 (33-81) from the field and outrebounded the Lions 71-48. Sophomore Mackenzie Brown (Lititz) added 14 points and rebounds.
Next up, the Lady Wildcats host Davis College on Saturday, Jan. 26 for a 1p.m. game.
