Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Transfer Students
What steps do I take if I want to transfer to Penn College from another college or university?
You must follow the typical admission procedure, including submitting an application and application fee (visit the Admissions website for more). In addition, Penn College requires an official transcript from each previous college and from your high school. You must also provide the Advisement Center with a college catalog or photocopies of the course descriptions and grade codes if the other college is not in our database.
Can I submit copies of my transcript or a printout from my previous college's online information system?
No. Penn College requires “official” transcripts, which must be sent directly from the other institutions to the Penn College Admissions Office. We cannot accept transcripts submitted by students.
Are there any specific requirements for international students?
International students must submit a certified copy of their credential evaluation from World Education Services, Inc. in addition to official transcripts from previous institutions.
Are there limits on how long a previous course is eligible for transfer?
The Admissions Office will consider course work less than 10 years old. The appropriate academic school will evaluate course work older than 10 years. Such course work may not be accepted for courses that rely on modern technology or include outdated content.
Will a course transfer if it does not have a true counterpart at Penn College?
A course syllabus may be required to determine if the course can be transferred as an elective or relevant 200-level course.
Can I request a course transfer for a course in which I have been scheduled for the coming semester?
No. It is your responsibility to make sure all transcripts have been received and all courses have been evaluated prior to scheduling. Once classes begin, a dropped course is subject to the College’s refund policy, even if dropped due to credit transfer.
Transfer Credit for Associate Degree or Certificate Majors
How many credits can I transfer into my major from another college?
A maximum of 30 transfer credits may be applied toward an associate’s degree. For certificate majors, a maximum of 50 % of the credits may be transferred.
Must I have earned a certain grade in the course to transfer the credits?
You must have earned a ‘C' (2.0) or better in the course to be transferred. An exception may be made if you have earned a cumulative average of 2.0 or higher in sequential courses (e.g., English 1 and English 2).
Do transferred credits show up on my transcript immediately?
The credits will appear on your transcript after you have successfully completed one semester of academic work at Penn College.
Transfer Credit for Baccalaureate Degree Majors
Are the requirements and limitations for transferring credit into baccalaureate majors the same as for associate and certificate majors?
Each baccalaureate degree major has its own procedures for incoming transfer students. Refer to the curriculum pages in the Bachelor’s Degrees section of the College Catalog for details.

How do I arrange to transfer a course I took over the summer at another college?
Students planning to take courses at another institution must have the courses evaluated and approved prior to taking them to ensure they meet transfer criteria. A grade of C (2.0) or higher is required for transfer.
