Placement Tests - Evaluating Skills

Placement tests focus on math, writing, and reading, the foundations for every major offered at Penn College. The tests provide a snapshot of your proficiencies in these areas.

The test results will help us to identify courses for which you are academically prepared. This will allow you to enter courses consistent with your skill levels, providing you the best chance for successful course completion. If placement test results call for developmental courses, you will be required to enroll in those courses. Developmental courses are designed to prepare you for the higher-level courses required in your major.

Test results also may signal possible difficulties within certain majors. For example, if your math placement test scores indicate you are proficient only at a basic level of arithmetic while your choice of a major requires calculus, you may need to re-evaluate your choice of major.

All of the tests have time limits; the tests are designed to measure your mastery of concepts within a specific time frame. It is a good idea to practice the skills represented in the sample tests so that you can work efficiently in the time allowed.

Penn College will not accept placement test scores from other institutions.

You may have taken entrance exams at other institutions, but you are required to complete Penn College's placement tests, which measure specific skills in a format that has proven effective for placing students in Penn College's unique curriculums.
