Placement Test Contents — Math
The math placement test consists of three components:
1. Pre-Algebra/Elementary Algebra
2. Intermediate Algebra
3. Functions and Graphs
Each student will take at least two of these components. Students who do very well on the Pre-Algebra/Elementary Algebra and the Intermediate Algebra components will be invited, on a different date, to take the Functions and Graphs portion of the exam.
Test Components
Pre-Algebra/Elementary Algebra
This component measures your ability to perform basic operations and to
solve problems that involve pre-algebra and elementary algebraic skills and
concepts. You may use a calculator but it is not necessary for this component of
the test.
What does the
Pre-Algebra/Elementary Algebra component measure?
Intermediate Algebra
This component measures your ability to perform basic algebraic operations
and to solve problems that involve intermediate algebraic skills and geometry
concepts. You may use a calculator but it is not necessary for this component of
the test.
What does the
Intermediate Algebra component measure?
Functions and Graphs
This component measures your ability to perform operations and to solve
problems that involve skills and concepts with functions and graphs in order to
determine your readiness for calculus. Algebraic, trigonometric, exponential and
logarithmic functions are included. You may use a calculator but it is not
necessary for this component of the test.
If you have advanced math skills and a recent math SAT score of 550 or higher, you are eligible to take the Functions and Graphs component of the test. SAT scores must not be older than 2 years.
If you do not have an SAT score of 550 or higher but you do
well on the Pre-Algebra/Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra components
of the test we will recommend you take the Functions and Graphs component at a
future time.
What does the Functions
and Graphs component measure?
