Denied Appeals
While all reasons for appeal and remediation strategies are reviewed and considered on an individual basis, there are some rationales students provide that typically result in immediate Appeal denial and should be avoided. Some of those appear below.
Questions about Your Remediation Strategy?
If you are in doubt about whether or not your remediation strategy is valid, contact the Advisement Center prior to submitting your Appeal.
Common Rationales and Strategies that Result in Denied Appeals
"I just think I can do better and would like another chance."
We do not automatically grant retests. We need to see that there is a legitimate reason to retest you.
"I had to get up early to drive here for testing and I was really tired."
Many students must travel a distance to get to campus. We suggest that you plan ahead and get adequate rest prior to testing. Feeling tired, alone, is not a reason we would grant a retest. See Placement Testing: Being Prepared.
"My friend is really good in math; he's going to help me study."
A friend, classmate, or relative who happens to be good in a subject but is not credentialed is not considered a qualified tutor. We are looking to see that you are working with someone who can assess your skill level and provide you with the materials, instruction, and guidance necessary to strengthen your weak skill areas.
"I borrowed a text book from the library so I can review on my own."
See the previous. The same basic principle applies here.
"I know there are only two weeks left until the last retest date, but I'm going to work really hard with my tutor."
You must allow reasonable time for remediation. We do have a deadline beyond which we will no longer accept remediation Appeals.
