Getting Into College: A Guide for High School Juniors
September
Get serious about your schoolwork if you have not already. Your junior-year
grades are extremely important.
If necessary, register for the SAT or ACT.
Review your final list of colleges with your counselor and start gathering
applications.
Look online for applications posted on college Web sites (www.pct.edu/admissions/howtoapply.htm).
Think about applying early.
October
If you have not yet seen Penn College, March is the perfect time to visit
during our Spring Open House. For more information visit www.pct.edu/openhouse/.
Take the SAT.
Take time to talk to your parents about any limitations that they may have in
mind for your college years – i.e. geographic or financial limitations.
For schools which accept applications from high school juniors, it is not too
early to apply.
November
Talk with your parents about how you will finance your college costs and how
much they expect you to pay.
If you apply early, you will receive materials from Penn College including
on-campus housing information. Make sure you fill out the form enclosed and
return the housing card, as on-campus housing is limited.
December
Review your SAT results with your guidance counselor.
January
Still undecided? Identify the characteristics of a college that matter to you:
size, geographical location, academic rigor, social environment, or diversity,
to name a few.
If you are interested in playing a sport, contact the coaches at the college you
are considering.
February
The new version of the SAT started March 2005. If you took the old version,
check with your college of choice to see if you need to take the new SAT, too.
March
If you have not yet seen Penn College, March is the perfect time to visit during
our Spring Open House. For more information visit
www.pct.edu/openhouse/.
With your parents or counselor, make a list of schools to visit during the
spring or summer. If possible, it is best to go while classes are in session or
on a designated Open House.
April
Register for June SATs and ACTs if you would like to try to improve your score.
May
Find a summer job that will enhance your skills. Possibly seek positions within
the field that you are interested in and remember no one starts as the company
president.
June
Start researching scholarships. You may find useful
information in your school, public library and online at
www.fastweb.com,
www.students.gov,
www.youcandealwithit.com,
www.collegeboard.com
and www.usnews.com.
July
Compile a resume of activities, honors, leadership positions, clubs and jobs;
this information will be requested many times. This preparation will come in
handy.
August
If you haven’t already, visit the college of your choice. Call the Admissions
Office and set up an appointment with an admissions representative or schedule a
campus tour. For more information, visit www.pct.edu/visit/.
