Words of Wisdom

... from an Early Childhood Education student (Summer 2006)

With your college search underway, I’m positive you have a ton of questions floating about in your head about schools, majors, people, professors, and living arrangements. I had these questions along with a barrage of others swimming in my head as I began and progressed with my college search.

When I was six, I knew what I wanted to be….a teacher. When I was eight, I was even surer that I wanted to be a doctor. When I was ten, I was positive I wanted to be a marine biologist, and by the time I turned twelve, I wanted to be a scientist. My job description has been changing since I was a child, but what I love hasn’t changed at all: children and science.

It only seemed natural for me to apply to all of the major league science schools and there was not a doubt in anyone’s mind I would be accepted. However, when I began profiling these large universities, my mind was flooded with even more doubts and uncertainties. “What if I couldn’t make it?” “What if I entered a class and there were 300 students, how could I learn like that?”

So how did I end up at Penn College you ask? The answer is simple…people. A cousin of mine attended Penn College and absolutely loved it, and when I came for a visit, I did too! Everyone was so nice from the main man working in the office to the custodian sweeping the floors to the students walking down the sidewalk! The people here genuinely cared about me and my welfare. They wanted the best for me and were willing to work with me ensuring I would receive the best.

Not only do the professors encourage me through questions, which they have time for because they are not inundated with students in each class, but they encourage me through hands on learning. Confucius once said, “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand,” and this is the philosophy of Penn College, doing and understanding.

Have I changed my major since applying? Yes. Will I change my major again? Yes, but this is okay! My best decision though has been attending Penn College!

Good luck,

Addie Burnham
