When is Summer PLUS?
Summer PLUS 2008 begins on Monday, June 23 and concludes on Friday, July 25. PLUS is a half-day program that runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. Summer PLUS students will also attend Connections on June 23 & 24 as part of Summer PLUS.
What is Summer PLUS?
PLUS is Preparation Leading to Undergraduate Success, a free five-week summer program designed for new students who are starting college in Fall 2008. It's a great opportunity for you as a highly-motivated, incoming student to learn how to succeed in college.
The free five-week Summer PLUS Program is designed to assist you before your first semester begins. It's a great opportunity since it is the one Penn College program that offers you a chance to remediate your academic weaknesses through non-credit instruction. Successful completers of Summer PLUS have an option to re-take their placement tests in one subject area. The flexible half-day format of Summer PLUS also allows time in the afternoon or evening to work a summer job or even take a second summer course not included in the program for credit at Penn College.
Past participants in the Summer PLUS program have found the program really helps to prepare them academically! During the past two summers, 71% of PLUS students retested into a higher course in at least one developmental area with 59% retesting into a higher level of math, 67% retesting into a higher level of English, and 54% retesting into a higher level of Reading.
PLUS is not just about academic remediation. It also provides an orientation to the campus as well as to the pace and expectations of college life, enhances cultural, and career awareness, and other fun events. Support in tutoring and counseling through PLUS will help you maximize your educational opportunities and realize your personal goals. Through individual contacts (by appointment or walk-in), staff from Act 101, TRIO, and other Academic Support Services will help support you in achieving academic success. Program statistics demonstrate that active participants improve their grades and are more likely to stay in school.
Summer PLUS is a highly selective program with participants chosen on the basis of motivation, aspiration, current academic level, and future academic potential. You should consider PLUS as soon as you complete your placement testing for the fall semester if you need to take a developmental course. This program gives college students a head start, making their first semester more meaningful and successful.
